Following yesterday’s announcement by Reading Borough Council announcing their intention to bid for City Status to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, Reading City Football Club would like to issue the following statement.

Reading City Football Club wholeheartedly supports the council’s intentions of bidding for City Status in 2022 to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Reading has long been referred to as a city and thoroughly deserves to have City status granted to us as we are a City in all but name.

In 2019 Reading won the prestigious award of City of the Year at the Thames Valley Property Awards.

2019 also saw Reading finish second in the UK for growth as per the PwC Good Growth for Cities 2019 index, narrowly behind Oxford and was named one of the best ‘cities’ to live and work in as a result.

Then in 2020, Reading was ranked 13th place in the Tier 2 Cities of the Future ratings.

As the second largest football team to serve the local community of Reading, we are thoroughly excited about the opportunities that this could bring to our beloved Reading.

We are proud to be at the heart of the Reading Community and would be even prouder to be at the heart of the City of Reading.

Should Reading’s city bid be successful, we know that as a Club we will have the huge honour of representing the City of Reading bestowed upon us and that prospect is one that greatly excites everyone that is connected with Reading City Football Club.

We can also confirm that we have reached out to Reading Borough Council to offer our support towards their bid.
