It’s a busy week here at Reading City Football Club with our Under 18s, Cityzens Squad, Under 23s and First Team in back-to-back action over the next 7 days.
Kicking us off this evening is our Under 18s combined FA Youth Cup Squad featuring players from both Reading City Football Club and our club partner John Madejski Academy’s Football Performance Programme when they head to head to Easington Sports in the Preliminary Round.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
Easington Sports FC was founded in 1946, initially competing in the Oxfordshire Junior League. The club achieved significant success in the late 1950s, winning back-to-back Premier Division titles. They later joined the Warwickshire Combination but returned to the Oxfordshire Senior League, where they won the Division One title in 1965–66 and the Ben Turner Trophy twice.
In the 1970s, the club moved to the Hellenic League, where they experienced various league reorganizations. They were champions of Division One West in 2018–19, which earned them promotion to the Premier Division. As of the end of the 2020–21 season, they were transferred to the Premier Division South of the United Counties League.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Despite both sides competing reguluarly at first team level, this will be the first time that our youngsters face Easington Sport.
Our combined squad made up of representatives from Club Partner John Madejski Academy’s Football Performance Programme and our own Under 18s side will face Easington Sports Development Squad who compete in Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 2 Central and have enjoyed a unbeaten start to the season with an 8-0 win and a 4-2 win on the road. Our youngsters are yet to start their league season.
Whilst our hosts had a bye in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Youth Cup, our youngsters fought near-neighbours Marlow at the Rivermoor to win 4-3 to set up tonight’s meeting.
