Simon Johnson’s side hit the road this weekend as part of their Combined Counties Football League Premier Division North campaign. We enter this tie after a week-long rest, following our fixture postponement against Milton United. Our opposition last met with Egham Town, narrowly losing out to the league leaders by a single goal, netted by Harlem Hale, who also scored in our home tie against The Sarnies.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
Amersham Town started out as one of the founder members of the Hellenic League during the 1953/54 league campaign, participating for eight years before joining the London League. However, this was only a short spell, before they made their return to the Hellenic League, entering Division One.
Across the next four seasons, the club experienced multiple league successes, earning promotion to the Premier Division in their first season since rejoining, and were named league runners-up in back-to-back seasons, in both the 1964/65 and 1965/66 seasons. Relegation in 1971 saw Amersham join the London Spartan League, and were soon promoted five seasons later to the Premier Division, despite only finishing sixth.
The league was renamed to the Spartan League, and in 1997/98, Amersham were a founding member of the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division South, and – due to league reorganisation – the Magpies were placed in the Senior Division. In 2001, this tier was renamed to Division One, and the next season saw the club drop into Division Two.
A twelve point deduction and switches between leagues saw Amersham move between Division One and Division Two three times across fifteen years. A seven point deduction fell in 2012/13, although this did not lead to a change in divisions.
In 2022/23, Amersham participated in the playoffs, however did not earn promotion, falling short to SF Rugby Borough, with a 4-0 away loss confirming this. The next season, the Magpies entered the Combined Counties League in Division One, fighting for promotion immediately and moving up the ranks into the Premier North Division.
Currently, Amersham Town sit in second position, with thirteen wins from twenty and a tally of forty-two points.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
This will be our second ever league meeting with the Magpies, with the first occurring back in October of this year, which ended in a narrow away win for Amersham Town.
Back in 2016/17, when we played under the name ‘Highmoor Ibis,’ we faced Amersham in the FA Vase First Round Qualifier and came away as 2-0 winners.
