January has been a rather frustrating month for Simon Johnson’s Cityzens, as a result of the cold snap and the wet weather we have unfortunately seen multiple games both here at the Rivermoor and on the road postponed.
With the weather now improving, Johnson’s side are looking forward to being back home again tomorrow afternoon as we welcome North Greenford United to RG30, both sides have yet to play any league action since the beginning of the new year so this should be entertaining as they look to start as they mean to go on!
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
North Greenford United was founded in 1944 as a youth team and gradually moved up through local leagues, achieving senior status in 2002 when they joined the Combined Counties League. They experienced significant success in the mid-2000s, winning the Combined Counties Championship in 2009/10 and earning promotion to the Southern Football League Division One Central.
However, the following years were marked by inconsistent league performances, frequent managerial changes, and relegation battles. Despite these challenges, the club enjoyed success in cup competitions, notably reaching the quarter-finals of the FA Vase in 2023/24 and achieving strong finishes in various other cup tournaments. Their journey reflects resilience and a determination to compete at higher levels despite obstacles.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
In the last five meetings between the sides City have won two and lost three.
Our most recent encounter was earlier this season in which we were beaten 4-1 at Berkeley Fields on 10th August 2024, meaning City haven’t won in North Greenford since the 13th August 2022, our home record however is much better with us last winning against tommorow’s visitors here on the 9th April 2024 with the game finishing 3-2.
Due to the weather and frustrating start to the year that has caused, this will actually be our first league game of 2025 but the Cityzens were in action on Tuesday evening in Cup action, as they took on Cobham away from home in the Second Round of the Cherry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup in which they lost 6-1. Johnson will be hoping that as we resume league action, having last played a league match here at the Rivermoor on Saturday 28th December in a 1-1 draw to Wallingford and Crowmarsh that we can start as mean to go on, taking advantage of those games in hand!
North Greenford United have also been fairly well rested in recent weeks as the cold snap caused pitches to be frozen right across the country, and have also yet to resume their league campaign since the new year commenced. They were last in action on the 7th January in which they suffered a 4-0 defeat away from home against Bedfont Sports in the Middlesex Senior Challenge Cup.
With both sides looking to resume their league campaigns and get back to winning ways it should be an exciting encounter, so we hope you can join us!
