The end of the 2023/24 season was a historic one for everyone involved with Reading City Football Club as we secured our first senior trophy since rebranding in 2018 as Simon Johnson led his side to securing the Southern Combination Challenge Cup here at the Rivermoor against Horley Town and tomorrow night we will begin our defence of that trophy in the hope of retaining it for another year.
With Simon Johnson away on his honeymoon, First Team Assistant Manager, Michael Butcher will be at the helm again tomorrow night. Please come on down and support Butch and the boys.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
Epsom & Ewell FC, founded in 1918 as Epsom Juniors, has a rich history in English football. They began with cricket before forming a football team in 1919. After early successes in local leagues, they became Epsom Town in 1922, winning several titles in the Surrey Senior and London Leagues. They reached the FA Cup first round in 1933 and were renamed Epsom in 1934. The club moved through various leagues over the years, including the Corinthian League, Athenian League, and Isthmian League, achieving success with league titles and cup wins, including a FA Vase final appearance in 1975.
After struggles in the 1980s and 90s, they were relegated but eventually gained success again, winning the Combined Counties League Premier Challenge Cup in 2012-13. In recent years, they earned promotion to the Premier Division South of the Combined Counties League in 2023, continuing their long history of resilience and competitiveness.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
This will be the first ever meeting between the two sides.
City come into this game on the back of a 2-2 draw on the road to Risborough Rangers in Combined Counties Football League Premier Division North action on Saturday, whilst Epsom & Ewell come into the game on the back of a 1-0 win at home to Spelthorne Sports in Combined Counties Football League Premier Division South action.
