It’s a busy week for our Under 18s as they play two games within 48 hours.
Monday evening will see us head to Oxfordshire to face North Leigh in the Subsidiary Cup and on Wednesday we face Wokingham Town at home in an RGClásico, where a win will put us top of the Allied Counties Central Division North with two games to go.
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
Wokingham Town, founded in 1875, moved to Finchampstead Road in 1906. They joined the Metropolitan League in 1954 and later played in the Delphian, Corinthian, and Athenian Leagues before entering the Isthmian League in 1973. Promoted to the Premier Division in 1982, they reached the FA Cup first round in 1982–83 and the FA Trophy semi-finals in 1987–88. Financial troubles in the 1990s led to relegations and the sale of their ground, resulting in ground shares with Windsor & Eton, Flackwell Heath, and Egham Town. They dropped to the Hellenic League to return to Wokingham at Emmbrook Sports’ ground.
In 2004, they merged with Emmbrook Sports, becoming Wokingham & Emmbrook, and competed in the Hellenic Football League. They won the Reading Senior Cup in 2009 and secured multiple wins through 2015. After sharing grounds with Bracknell Town in 2009, they moved to the Hellenic League Premier Division. The club made its FA Cup debut in 2011–12 and explored a merger with Woodley Town in 2011.
Promoted to the Combined Counties League Premier Division North in 2021, they reverted to the name Wokingham Town in May 2024.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Our youngsters have only faced Wokingham on one occasion competitively, having only joined the Allied Counties Youth Football League this season, following the switch from the Combined Counties Football League Tony Ford Under 18 Division West.
That first competitive meeting was earlier this year when we travelled to Lowther Road on Thursday 6th February, where we came away with a 0-3 win. Our youngsters will be hoping to do the double over our local rivals on Wednesday evening as they know a win will put them on top with just two games left to play!
Johno’s side come into this game on the back of a 0-3 win against North Leigh on Monday 24th March in an Allied Counties Youth Football League Subsidiary Cup Group Stage clash.
Wokingham Town travel to Reading on the back of a defeat having lost 2-1 on the road to Binfield on Thursday 20th March in Allied Counties Youth Football League Central Division Action.
Our youngsters will be keen to return to league action as a win will put them top with two games to go. Our last league game was in fact away to Wokingham Town on Thursday 6th February in which we won 0-3. We’ll be hoping to do the double when we welcome them to RG30 for another RGClásico this Wednesday.
