The action continues with games coming thick and fast this week!

Tomorrow night Simon Johnson’s Cityzens will kick off ‘The Rivermoor Festival of Football’ in the first of four back-to-back home games for our First Team as we welcome near-neighbours Holyport to RG30 in an all-Berkshire Combined Counties Football League Premier Division North clash.

ABOUT THE OPPOSITION

Holyport Football Club, founded on September 1, 1897, began its journey in the Maidenhead and District League, playing at Windsor Road, Bray. Over the years, the club advanced to various leagues, eventually moving to Summerleaze Park in 2004, marking a new era of growth. The ground saw continuous improvements, including fencing, floodlights, grandstands, and more, enabling the club to compete at higher levels like the FA Vase and FA Cup.

The 2010/11 season was particularly successful, with Holyport winning four cups, including the Hellenic Division 1 East title. The club’s development continued, with the addition of youth and junior teams, culminating in their 125th anniversary year in 2022, which featured significant successes, including historic FA Cup and Vase runs. In 2023/24, Holyport achieved their highest-ever league finish and points total at Step 5, although they lost in the playoffs.

Preparations for the 2024/25 season have seen new management and infrastructure improvements, like a new teabar. Coupled with the Spencers Farm Housing Development getting the greenlight, it promises to be an exciting future for the club.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Last season saw both sides fight for promotion and both deservedly reached the play-off places with the hope of achieving promotion to Step 4. Sadly, it wasn’t to be but both sides will no doubt be in amongst it again this season.

Holyport are enjoying a strong side to the 2024/25 League Campaign, having played six games in which they’ve won 3, drawn two and lost only one.

Holyport come into this game on the back of a defeat, having lost to North Greenford United away from home on Saturday.

The Cityzens on the other hand have had a frustratingly slow start to their league campaign due to our FA Cup and FA Vase fixtures, but with three games in hand they’ll be looking to gain ground on the rest of the league this month as they’ll be spurred on by the home advantage.

Johnson’s side come into the game on the back of a draw as Saturday’s trip to league newcomers British Airways frustratingly ended 3-3.

GETTING HERE

By Car:  Leave the M4 at Junction 12 and take the A4 towards Reading.

Then take a left at the first set of traffic lights at Langley Hill, At the top of Langley Hill you’ll come to a roundabout where you’ll see the Water Tower public house on your left-hand side.

Continue straight on over the roundabout and travel through the centre of Tilehurst before taking a right turn into Norcot Road.

This turning is at the crossroads just past the Asda Petrol Station on your left-hand side, continue straight on down Norcot Road and then take a left on to the A329 Oxford Road before taking the first right on to Scours Lane.  You’ll see Reading City Football Club sign-posted.

Once you’ve turned on to Scours Lane continue straight on under the railway bridge and then take a right to enter The Rivermoor which is clearly signed.

Parking: Parking is available on site here at The Rivermoor at no extra cost on a first come first served basis, there are 80 spaces available to park in the ground. In the event that the club car park is full, then additional car parking is available at the Reading Retail Park, where you are permitted to a maximum stay of 3 hours.

Leave the Rivermoor and drive back up Scours Lane until you reach the junction with the A329, then turn left. Continue straight on at the roundabout before turning right to enter Reading Retail Park.

It’s roughly a 5-10 minute walk back to the Rivermoor.

Nearest Railway Station: The nearest railway stations to The Rivermoor are Reading West & Tilehurst, both of which are served by regular services operated by Great Western Railway from the much larger Reading Station and are in walking distance from the Rivermoor.

Reading West is also served by services from destinations including Basingstoke & Newbury whilst Tilehurst is also served by services from destinations including Didcot & Oxford.

Bus: The nearest bus stop to the ground is Norcot Junction and is served by the 16 and 17 Reading Bus service which travel between Central Reading and Tilehurst every 10 minutes. More details on the bus route/s here.
